Title:   Assessing the Freight Transport System in India: Overview of Current State and Methodological Challenges

Abstract:
Movement of goods and passengers are met by a variety of modes of transport. Governments all over the world have a challenging task in laying out transport policies to ensure a desirable modal mix. A critical input for these transport policies is an understanding of the current state of the transport system and its likely response to various policy measures.

The current talk is based on Total Transport System Study (TTSS) undertaken by RITES Limited, a public sector undertaking, for the Planning Commission, Government of India. The talk delves on three issues of freight transport (i) an appraisal on the current state of the freight transport sector and the estimated future demand, (ii) a broad overview of the methodologies adapted in the study, and (iii) research opportunities in the sector.

Speaker bio:
M. Ravibabu, a Fellow from IIMA, has worked in Indian Railways for more than 20 years in various capacities. He is currently employed with RITES, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, and was one of the team members in the Total Transport System Study. He has a keen academic interest in analysing the transport systems of the country.
