IEOR e-Seminar by Dr. Anirudh Subramanyam

Title of the talk: Mitigating Extreme Failures in Complex Infrastructure Systems

Speaker: Dr. Anirudh Subramanyam, Postdoctoral researcher, Mathematics and Computer Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory, USA.

Abstract: Infrastructure systems, such as water, energy, and transportation, are increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather, cyber attacks, disruptive technologies, and uncertain market environments. Quantifying and mitigating risk in such complex systems requires crosscutting computational approaches that can exploit modern developments in optimization and statistics, in conjunction with domain-specific models. We illustrate this approach to enable accurate predictions, resilient system designs, and scalable decision-making in energy and transportation infrastructures. In particular, we discuss how ideas from large deviation theory, data-driven robust optimization, convex analysis, and numerical linear algebra, can be combined to prevent extreme blackouts in electrical power grids, and (time permitting) to design transportation operations that are robust to market uncertainties in industrial supply chains.

Speaker Bio: Anirudh Subramanyam is a postdoctoral researcher in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He obtained his bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2013), and his doctoral degree in Process Systems Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (2018). His research interests include optimization under uncertainty, applied probability, and high-performance computing, to address applications in critical infrastructure, energy, transportation, and supply chain systems. He is the recipient of a Bertucci Graduate Fellowship from Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering and a second-place prize for the Best Dissertation in Transportation Science and Logistics from The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).
