Title : A Tall Tale of Two Tails: Tête-à-tête with Branching Random Walks in the Long Run
Abstract: Random walks are simple mathematical models for describing how something moves when each step involves an element of chance. They appear in many areas, from physics and biology to finance, networks, and computer science. What happens if the walkers can also reproduce, so that one particle becomes two, then four, and eventually a large population? This leads to a branching random walk - a simple model that combines random movement with growth. In this talk, aimed at students from all disciplines, we will explore a natural question: after the system has been running for a very long time, how far can the most advanced particles travel? We shall see how a surprisingly rich mathematical picture emerges from this simple idea.
