Title: Modelling techniques for marine traffic safety and harbor intelligence

Speaker: Dr. Ketki Kulkarni, PostDoc, Aalto University, Finland

Day, Date, Time: Tuesday, Aug 17, 2021 11:30 AM Indian Time.

Abstract:

Ports are an important part of the oceans-to-land value chain. With increased traffic causing congested waterways around the world, ports are required to speed up operations. Ports have to handle not just operational issues for efficiency, but also national and international safety and security laws. The personnel, equipment and land used in ports are usually high cost resources, which need to be used optimally. Aalto University is currently working on port and harbor intelligence between the sea link from Helsinki to Tallinn. These include challenges related to changing navigation conditions due to weather as well as accidental risks. The work involves use of data from the port for developing decision support systems for port managers. In this research, we study computational models for intelligent port operations using the available data and under varying weather conditions. The goal is to identify frameworks that can be adapted to different ports across the globe, with inputs from local experts. The results of this study will provide the groundwork for building these decision support systems with computationally efficient models.

About the Speaker:

Ketki Kulkarni is a research fellow in Marine and Arctic Technology at Aalto University. She is currently working on building decision support capabilities for winter navigation using simulation-optimization techniques. She specializes in the use of advanced simulation software for industrial applications. Prior to this, she worked in Singapore Management University, where she managed the design and implementation of a decision support tool for port gate management. She had obtained her PhD in IEOR, IIT Bombay.  She is not only interested in contributing to the methodology literature, but also in developing efficient tools that are used by organizations for their daily operations. She finds packaging the research work (math and sim models) into usable solutions exciting and challenging.
