The train pathing and timetabling problem is the basic one to evaluate capacity of the railway section. This problem can be solved in following ways:
- By a simulator as one developed at IIT Bombay (pdf).
- By Math Programming Based Approach, in which the problem is formulated as a linear program, integer program, mixed integer program or dynamic program. This type of approach can be found in M. Carey (pdf)(pdf).
- The problem viewed as a huge job shop scheduling problem (pdf). In which train trips viewed as jobs to be scheduled on segments, which are viewed as machines.
