This version of the course IE 401 will attempt to cover the following application areas:
- Planning tools for public transport (timetabling, crew planning and vehicle planning) - for bus, metro and suburban rail. A rambling page about various research and application efforts in this area is here, but we will cover more basic models related to this topic.
- Applications to domains such as sports, electoral systems and other areas based on mutual interest. For examples of possible applications in sports, see here.
The techniques used will be simple optimization models, including linear and integer programming, simulation and game theoretic models. Case studies and hands on exercises will be attempted in class. There will be some exposure to real data and scenarios encountered in real life.
Evaluation will be based on exams, assignments and a course project.
There are no pre-requisites for the course.
