IEOR e-Seminar by Dr. Reshma

Title of the talk: A constructive matheuristic approach for the shift minimization personnel task scheduling problem

Speaker: Dr. Reshma Chirayil Chandrasekharan

Day, Date and Time: Thursday, July 29, 2021, 10 am to 11 am.

Abstract of the talk: Matheuristics are algorithmic hybrids of heuristic and mathematical programming methods. This talk presents a decomposition-based matheuristic approach developed for an NP-complete personnel task scheduling problem that concerns the assignment of tasks to multi-skilled employees with a view to minimize the total number of assigned employees. An automatic decomposition approach was proposed that utilizes the instance structure to arrive at a suitable decomposition strategy, which will be discussed in detail. The talk also aims at presenting a brief overview of my current work in graph vertex coloring and thereby motivate some of my future research interests.

About the Speaker: Reshma Chirayil Chandrasekharan completed her PhD in Industrial Engineering from the department of Computer Science, KU Leuven, Belgium in 2021. During her PhD she worked in the area of matheuristics, a class of algorithms that hybridize Mathematical Programming and heuristics. She has also been able to apply her research in applications such as sports scheduling, personnel scheduling and also in more general problems such as the graph vertex coloring problem. Her research projects have improved international benchmarks and the outcome have been published in top ranked journals such as the European Journal of Operational Research and the Journal of Heuristics, with a few yet to be published. Her current research interests broadly lie in designing decomposition based algorthms for large  combinatorial optimization problems. She holds a BSMS dual degree in Science from IISER, Pune, India and believes in inquiry based learning. She aspires to be a versatile educator and likes collaborating with industry and working on inter-disciplinary projects.
