Post-Doc Opportunities 2024

Information for IPDF Applicants

IEOR, IIT Bombay welcomes applications for Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowships (IPDF) from qualified candidates with a PhD degree in Operation Research, Industrial / Systems Engineering or in any related discipline.

Eligibility Criteria:

Fresh PhDs or PhDs with less than 2 years of experience or research scholars who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting examination are eligible to apply. The candidates should be preferably below 32 years of age. IIT Bombay's own PhD students are not eligible for this position.

Applicants must have published a minimum of two publications in reputed journals or conference proceedings. All journals and conference proceedings listed in Scopus or SCI or CORE or ABDC or AMS MathSciNet will be considered as reputed. Other journals and conference proceedings that are considered as reputed by the department are listed below:

  • Proceedings of Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization (only full papers)
  • Proceedings of International System Dynamics Conference (only full papers)
  • Proceedings of all IEEE conferences (only full papers)
  • Proceedings of ACM conferences and journals (only full papers)

Merely fulfilling this criterion does not guarantee selection. The IPDF is highly competitive: there are only a limited number of IPDF positions in the Department.  International applicants are also encouraged to apply.

Duration and benefits

The period of the IPDF is one year. Candidates will be considered for extension for a second year based on their performance in the first year. Such candidates will submit a research plan for the second year, which will be duly evaluated and recommended by an expert committee. There will be no extension after two years.

The fellowship, other benefits are as mentioned in IITB website: https://www.iitb.ac.in/en/careers/institute-post-doctoral-fellows-recruitment

IPDFs are also entitled to 30 days of earned leave per year, OPD medical treatment, and casual leave as per rules of the Institute.  Financial support is provided for one international conference during the tenure of the fellowship for the presentation of their research work done at IIT Bombay. Support for one national conference per year is also provided.  Office workspace will be provided for all PDFs in IEOR.

BEFORE APPLYING

Applicants are advised to view the IEOR webpage (www.ieor.iitb.ac.in) to learn about its faculty members and their fields of teaching and research. Every applicant should identify a faculty member in IEOR to act as the IPDF Supervisor, and prepare a research proposal in consultation and agreement with this faculty member. The research proposal, typically 1-3 pages long, should describe the background work, objectives, methodology, etc., along with research plans for the first year.

APPLYING

Interested candidates are requested to submit their application by email to Head, IEOR (head.ieor [at] iitb.ac.in). The application should contain the following:

Note: Externally funded PDFs (e.g. SERB N-PDFs) are also to follow the same process/ format for their application.

Review process

All applications will be processed through the department by a faculty committee. Candidates may be called for a seminar and interactions.  Shortlisting candidates will then be considered by IITB’s Standing Committee. The applicant will be selected on the basis of recommendation of the Standing Committee. The entire process can take anywhere between 1 week to 8 weeks.

Expectations from IPDF

An IPDF is expected to carry out new research work with the Supervisor, on a full-time basis on-campus. Publications in the form of conference proceedings and journal articles are strongly encouraged and expected. Publications resulting from the IPDF research should acknowledge IIT Bombay and IEOR for the support through the IPDF programme.

Besides their research work, IPDFs could, in consultation with their faculty mentors, help with teaching activities including lab courses, and assist PhD/ MTech/ MSc/ BTech  students in their projects, besides administrative duties. IPDFs may find this experience of value in their future careers.

Total Number of IPDFs

The number of IPDF positions in IEOR is limited. A faculty member may act as Supervisor for at most 2 IPDFs at any point in time (excludes externally funded PDFs). Preference will be given to faculty with no PDFs presently.

PDF applicants can contact any faculty in IEOR for their post doctoral work. The following faculty members are especially looking for suitable PDFs:

  • Ashutosh Mahajan
