Student-Faculty Meeting

IEOR students - faculty meeting is scheduled to be held on 19th April 2012 at 12.00 noon at  ME 217.

The following are few concerns/points we would like to discuss. All members of IEOR family are encourgaed to put forward your comments and suggestions. You can use "comments" option to add your remarks.

  1. Conference funding
    1. Conference financial support: what is the department policy? Could we have timely updates on status of applications? What is the usual time line followed and typical delays involved?
    2. Conference travel within India
  2. TA allocations
we faced some issues in the previous semester, namely:
    1. Felt that many second year students were not allotted any TA works
    2. had difficulty in getting their support during ISCI, while a groups of students were worked overtime, others did not even turn up.
    3. there was no one assigned for website and server. Therefore we missed few posting on IEOR seminars. Normally webTAs will have more work such as creating new pages for courses, time table, project details, student's name etc in July sem. So it be good if web TAs can be assigned in the coming semester.
    4. TA allocation chart for every semester, at the end of the semester can include a TA feedback. Some official record for successful completion of TA duty.

  3. Lab courses
could be synchronised.  Most of the time we end up in repeating the same lessons. It will be good to have a common place (either at website/optimus) to keep software tutorials. So that even those who are not registered for the course, especially phds, can benefit from this.
  4. Suggestions regarding internal repositories, continuity in projects
As of now IEOR does not have a mechanism in place for supporting continuity in student projects.  Last year we started an initiative to collect the codes (cplex/matlab/opl etc) from the second year students and archive in a server. Success rate was less than 20%. It will significantly reduce the time and effort of new students those who are willing to continue on same project. IEOR could keep a copy of the code as the institute recommended and provided rough books for all labs to ensure the authenticity.
  5. Regular disappointment with certain courses and no improvement even after feedback
No effect of course feedback: Certain courses, critical to IEOR programs, are not meeting the expectations of the PhD community. We could not see any significant changes due to any feedback. We take a serious view of this since subsequent batches have met with similar outcomes.
  6. Timeline and concerns regarding the qualifiers
    1. Stipend
    2. Focus on actual research
  7. Lab space and additional facilities
    1. New phd students + MSCs
  8. IEORSA - IEOR student association (Link)
    1. Recently we have seen a debate over some coordinator post. As of now there is no official body or norms for the selection and monitoring.
  9. Group Meetings
    1. Msc PhD to work in coordination with Mtechs and PhDs
    2. Collaborative efforts
