Title: Modelling and Analysis of a Closed-Loop Supply Chain in Presence of Product Exchange Offer

Abstract: Closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) management has been receiving increasing attention both in industry as well as in academia due to high potential of value recovery from the used products, strict legislations and increasing social awareness worldwide. Incentive mechanisms in the form of product exchange offers aid in effective acquisition of used products from the consumers. In this talk, first, we propose a product-recovery framework to acquire the used products from consumers by taking into account their willingness to accept a product exchange offer. Then, the proposed recovery framework is integrated with a non-linear optimization model for a multi-period CLSC to maximize the overall profit of the integrated system by determining the optimal discount amount that needs to be offered to the consumers to incentivize them to return the used products. Additionally, we also determine the optimal manufacturing quantity for new products, optimal re-manufacturing and disposal quantity for returned products. Finally, we conduct a comparative study to investigate the performance of CLSC for two cases: (i) collection through product exchange offer and (ii) collection through third-party without product exchange offer.

Brief Bio: Debabrata Das is a faculty member in the area of Operations Management and Decision Sciences at IIM Kashipur. He holds a Master’s degree in Mathematics from IIT Bombay and a Ph.D. in Supply Chain Modelling from SJM School of Management, IIT Bombay. His current research and teaching interests include Closed-loop Supply Chain Management, Supply Chain Modelling and Optimization, Multi-Objective Optimization, System Dynamics Modelling and Analysis, Multi-Criterion Decision Analysis and Decision Making under Risk and Uncertainty. Before embarking into Ph.D, he worked as a Risk Analyst in Citi Group Global Services Ltd.
