The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR), IIT Bombay organized a field visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) for the first-year B.Tech students on 5th November 2025.
Prior to the visit, students were introduced in class to the fundamentals of port and ship scheduling, providing them with a theoretical foundation to better appreciate the practical aspects of port operations.
The visit began with a tour of the JNPA Museum, where students explored the rich history of the port. They learned about the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the evolution of maritime trade in the region.
Following this, the group visited the Port Administrative Building, where they observed the port’s extensive infrastructure from the rooftop. They saw the containers, port terminals, cargo handling operations, ships, and loading–unloading activities.
The visit concluded with an interactive session led by the Port Harbour Master (Captain), who provided insights into port operations, logistics management, and the coordination required in handling large-scale maritime activities. The students actively participated in the discussion, linking their classroom learning on scheduling with real-world operational challenges.
The visit offered a valuable experiential learning opportunity, bridging theoretical concepts with practical understanding of port operations, logistics, and supply chain management.
