 Dear Anirban,

Sandhya not only showed up but made sure about the only concrete thing promised in the agenda, namely a cup of tea to all.  We must thank her and her friends for this.

I request Ravikant Rai, Shrikant Bhavsar and Anirban to help me create a list of those who attended, for the minutes and also to point people to the ORSI site, membership form etc.  For just a few hundred rupees, one earns the right to either complain about the status of OR in the country or to revolutionalize the state of OR in the country.  One can do it for free also, but we do feel more righteous if we are members of something.

 Dear friends,

This is to announce a meeting of the Greater Mumbai Chapter of the
Operational Research Society of India on Wednesday, January 9th 2013, at
5 p.m. in Room 201, Mech Engineering Department, IIT Bombay.

The chapter has been so dormant of late that it is difficult to call it
even alive.  However, it may still provide a platform for enthusiastic
O.R. practitioners, students, teachers and others interested in O.R.

So, please come for:

a) Some tea
b) Election/selection/nomination of new office bearers for the chapter
c) Info on membership and the activities of the society (for new members)
d) Updates on recent events [OPTIMA 2012 held in Delhi and the Annual
Convention held in Kolkata in December 2012]
e) Any other item.

Pl inform friends, well wishers and relatives, who may wish to come.
Those who cannot participate in person are requester to send me an email
about anything they wish to say regarding the Mumbai chapter.

Sincerely,

Narayan Rangaraj

In this meeting, I hope that those who attended Optima in Delhi and ICOCBA in Kolkata volunteer to give a brief update on the conferences.  This will be useful input for others.

In the past, ORSI Mumbai has organized the annual convention in 1996, organized a few one day worshops and talks, and is now looking for a new team of those intereted in OR to take t hings forward. The chapter also offered some support to the simulation conference last year.

The next meeting of the Mumbai chapter has been announced.  There is still plenty of room at the top for those interested in organizing anything related to ORSI.  Please contact Prof Jayendran or me, if interested.

After the last event, perhaps understandably so, there was no big rush for joining ORSI.  I can only point out that EURO 2013 in Rome, earlier in July this year attracted more than 3400 participants, and I think the bulk of them were Ph.D. students in O.R. and related disciplines.  So O.R. is certainly doing well, worldwide. Many software companies and users also participated in the conference.

Dear students,

The OR Society of India (Operational Research Society of India) has a Mumbai chapter.  This chapter is dormant, but needs to be revived, with some new members having joined and a lot of activity in our own institute.  We will be having a meeting in early January (perhaps January 9th) and if any of you is interested in participating in or helping in organizing this meeting, please contact me.

Many of our Ph.D. students and some alumni attended ORSI events in Delhi and Kolkata earlier this year and presented papers.  ORSI also brings out a refereed journal "Opsearch" which publishes articles of interest to OR professionals.
