Research scholar M Venkateswararao won the student Best Paper in ITS Workshop for his work on "Bus schedule for optimal bus bunching and waiting times" at the 10th International Conference on COMmunication Systems & NETworkS (COMSNETS 2018) held at Bengaluru this year. This work was done by Venky in collaboration with his advisor Prof V. Kavitha and their collaborator Urtzi Ayesta at CNRS
Ratnaji Vanga defended his Ph.D. thesis titled "Supply Chain Management of Reusable Articles" on July 3, 2017. The research work was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Jayendran V. and Prof. Narayan Rangaraj. The external examiner was Prof. R. K. Amit of IIT Madras.
IEOR is happy to welcome the appointment of Prof. Vishnu Narayanan as Associate Professor in the department, as of May 2017. Prof. Vishnu works in the areas of mathematical programming, convex optimization and integer programming.
On March 30, 2017, Prof. Narayan Rangaraj has been apppointed as the new Head of IEOR. He has taken over from Prof Hemachandra, who held this post since 24 January, 2011.
Tilak Raj Singh defended his Ph.D. thesis titled "Configuration planning in mass customization : Optimization based models" on January 9, 2017. The external examiner was Prof Anshuman Tripathy of IIM Bangalore.
Dr. Manjesh Hanawal has joined IEOR family as an Assistant Professor on new year's day of 2016. He received a Ph.D. from INRIA and University of Avignon and M.Sc. (Engg.) from Indian Institute of Science Bangalore. Before joining us he was a postdoctoral researcher at Boston University. His research interests lie at the intersection of Communication Networks, Machine Learning, and Network Economics. He is currently developing learning-algorithms that use data efficiently.

Prof. Narayan Rangaraj and his collaborators organised on May 30 a workshop at IIT Bombay for operations planning and strategy in railways. The workshop brought together several experts and officials from CRIS, Railway Board, Western Railway and Central Railway divisions of the Indian Railways, and also researchers from industry and academia. The workshop featured talks, a panel discussion and a poster session.
