A seminar by Prof. K. B. Athreya

Title: What is Probability Theory?
Speaker: Krishna B. Athreya, Iowa State University
Venue: Room 217, Mechanical Engineering
Time: 9:45 am, Friday July 31, 2015.

Abstract: A mathematical model for random phenomena was constructed by the great Russian mathematician A.N. Kolmogorov. In this talk we will explain his construction and discuss the cases of finite, countable and uncountable sample spaces.  We will illustrate this with examples. We will discuss the laws of large numbers and the central limit theorem.

If there is time we will discuss some more advanced problems.

Speaker Bio: K. B. Athreya is a visiting professor in the Mathematics Department here at IIT Bombay till August 31. He is an emeritus faculty in mathematics and statistics at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, USA. His areas of research are probability theory, stochastic processes and  mathematical analysis. He enjoys teaching mathematics at all levels. He is very fond of Indian Classical music.
