Title: Multi-Paradigm Simulation-based Decision Support System For Medical Procedures

Speaker: Dr. Saurabh Jain, Intel Corporation, USA.

Day, Date, and Time: Thursday, August 31st, 2023, 9 30 AM to 10 30 AM.(Online mode)

Talk Abstract:  Medical procedures are often performed under the most challenging work environments, demanding higher accuracy and precision in cognitive and technical (psychomotor) skills. More specifically, minimally invasive procedures require higher dexterity to perform the treatment/diagnosis using camera equipment in one hand, and surgical/procedural equipment on the other hand. Thus, it poses a grand challenge to provide a comprehensive system that can provide progressive training, perform objective assessment of psychomotor skills, and assist in studying the decision-making under time and situational uncertainties. In this talk, I will start with three major simulation modelling paradigms: 1) discrete event (DE), 2) agent-based (AB), and 3) system dynamics (SD). I will discuss and focus on applications of Advanced simulation methods in healthcare systems. First, I will focus on laying the foundation for utilization of VR-based hybrid simulation for two different types of medical procedures. Second, I will discuss the framework for implementing the Virtual Reality based systems for the aforementioned procedures. Subsequently, I will discuss the advantages and a use case for utilizing VR to gain access to high-fidelity data for proficiency classification and gain insights into the caregivers' behavior. Finally, I will conclude by summarizing the importance of advanced simulation methodologies in healthcare and other application areas.

Bio: Saurabh Jain received his Ph.D. from the Department of Systems Industrial and Engineering at the University of Arizona in 2021. He received his B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from India in 2015, and the M.S. in Industrial Engineering from The University of Arizona in 2017. Dr. Jain is currently working as Operations Research Engineer at Intel Corporation, Chandler, USA. His main focus areas include design and develop high fidelity models can be used to quantify impacts to fab loadings through new product introduction, expedited products, and changes to process, and layout. These models are used to examine the impact of WIP management strategies on the overall fab performance. Overall he has a diverse experience with research focus on applied simulation modeling and analysis for large-scale systems for different application domains including manufacturing systems, healthcare systems, border security, and social networks. Dr. Jain has authored and co-authored published papers in different application domains at journals and conferences of national and international repute. He is a member of Institute of Operation Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS), Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), society for modelling simulation international, and the society for simulation in healthcare.
