Hritiz Gogoi, a PhD scholar from IEOR, and Swpnil Engla, an MTech student from IEOR, participated in a research internship in Industrial Engineering at Purdue University from mid-June to July end.
Hritiz’s internship focused on studying Traveling Salesman Problems (TSPs) related to Orbital Debris Removal, which involves finding efficient ways to manage and eliminate space debris that poses a threat to satellites and spacecraft. During the internship, he conducted a literature review on the topic and presented his findings at Purdue University. Hritiz is pursuing his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Vishnu Narayanan and Prof. Avinash Bhardwaj in IEOR.
Swpnil’s internship focused on developing a Midwest regional model for advanced electrical grid analysis. His project aimed to utilize the High-Performance Electrical Energy Systems Simulator (HELICS) and synthetic grid data to create an integrated wholesale-retail electricity market model. This model explored critical areas such as long-term system planning, short-term grid operation, the integration of distributed energy resources (DER), and the impact of various policies on grid emissions. Swpnil defended his M.Tech thesis in Spring 2024 under the guidance of Prof. Manjesh Hanawal in IEOR.
