Title: Theoretical foundations for Digital Twin Technology: some project-driven research perspectives

Abstract: Starting from current projects exploring the applications of Digital Twins, this presentation will look into important research questions that need further study. The aim is to build strong theoretical foundations based on systems theory to support the design and use of Digital Twins.

Bio: Mamadou Kaba TRAORE is full Professor at the University of Bordeaux, France, where he is the Deputy Director of the Integration from Material to System lab (IMS), specifically in charge of international research. He got his MSc in Mathematical Engineering in 1989 and his PhD in Computer Science in 1992, both at the Blaise Pascal University (France). His research interests are in Hybrid Modeling & Simulation, with focus on combining DEVS (Discrete Event Systems Specification), and Digital Twins Engineering, with application to cyber physical systems in Industry, smart cities, and connected healthcare. He received the international DEVS award in 2011 (Boston, MA, USA). Overall, he has published and co-published 10 books, a dozen book chapters, and 150+ papers in international peer reviewed journals and conferences. He has various editorial responsibilities, including being associate editor of JOURNAL OF SIMULATION, and SIMULATION: TRANSACTIONS OF THE SCS, and the organization of several SCS conferences, as General Chair or Program Chair. He has been rewarded by the Outstanding DEVS Symposium Program Chair award in 2010 (Orlando, FL, USA). He is member of the review committee of dozens of international journals, and has given several invited talks in prestigious institutions, such as the National Institute for Standards and Technologies (NIST, Gaithersburg, MD, USA). He also served in the World Bank-led scientific advisory board that created the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Nigeria, which he became the President from 2012 to 2014. He coordinated several EU-funded research and industrial projects, and developed collaboration with many universities in Africa, Europe, Canada and USA.
