Glimpses of IEOR in PG Sports 2011-12

PG Sports is an institute level sports event organized by the students of IIT Bombay to encourage all PG students in sports. This year 23 departments participated in PG Sports. These are some of the briefings of IEOR students in PG Sports.

Phase-I

Initially our department came up with PG Sports t-shirt, which is shown in the image attached. The design is a combined effort of Madhu Tangudu and Pritham Kamble.

Events in  PG Sports started with Table Tennis  and Carrom. IEOR started the new season on a positive note by winning gold in Table tennis (Girls) .  This was the first medal for IEOR in the new season. Table Tennis team consisted of Ketki Kulkarni (captain), Neha Phatak and Indu Choudhary.  Ketki was unbeaten throughout  the tournament in singles. Winning moments of TT are shown in the image attached.  In carrom(Boys), IEOR fought their way to the semi finals. Raju Prajapathi, currently M.Sc-Phd 2nd year played very well which helped in reaching the semis. IEOR lost Table tennis (Boys) in first match. Our guys faced tough competition and gave a good fight, losing with a slight difference in points. In Table tennis, Rohan Rao has been a good find from the freshers. Carroms(girls) lost in their second match.

IEOR retained the winning momentum in the next events as well. Badminton and Chess were two events where expectations were running high. As expected, IEOR won silver in badminton (boys). The team consisted of Pritam Kamble (captain), Yogesh Valunj and Debayan Das. Pritam was unbeaten in singles throughout the tournament.    In Chess(Boys) and Badminton(girls),  IEOR reached the semi finals. We expected a medal in chess(Boys) but had to contend with a spot in semis . Initially our guys were leading in both time and powers but a small mistake changed the entire scenario. Overall it was a good experience for our guys.

The next events in line were PG Crossy and Squash which are both open events (unrestricted number of entries from each department). Three from our department participated in PG Crossy. Robin Bhandari, currently M.sc-Phd 3rd year student  who is a good athlete, stood 11th among 85 students from different departments. In Squash no one participated. Reason behind it is very few were aware of this game. We hope next time it won’t happen. With this Phase-I of PG sports came to a closure. By the end of Phase-I IEOR stood   4th position (Girls) and 7th position (Boys) in overall points tally among 23 departments.

Phase-II

The second phase started with football, which was played under lights. Playing under lights is an out of the world experience and one of those cherishable takeaways from IIT Bombay. We had a good foot ball team and expected medal but lost in the first match due to less understanding in players strengths among team. More practice would have definitely helped in better understanding. Next year we shall see that this won’t happen. Shashikanth Dubey, Goutham and Rishab Vij are recognized as  good players from the fresh pool of talent.

The next event was Lawn Tennis, another open event. IEOR clinched another gold in lawn tennis (Girls).  Ketki Kulkarni, PhD student, who is an inter IIT  player, won it for IEOR. Her performance in the game was excellent and all matches turned out to be one-sided. This was the first medal IEOR got in second phase. Coincidently, she was instrumental in getting the first medal for IEOR in both the phases.

After Lawn tennis, Volleyball and Athletics started. In athletics, IEOR got gold in Discuss throw (Girls). Vyshnavi, 1st year M.Tech clinched it for IEOR. There were many events in athletics like 100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m running races, long jump, 4*100m relay and shot put. Sweety Hansuwa, 3rd year MSc student, ran a spirited run and almost won a bronze before meeting with a fall and injuring herself. Many from IEOR participated but could not win medals. Our main athletes Robin Bhandari and Shashikanth Dubey, who showed great promise in GC(General Championship), were ill on those days . Overall  IEOR students have shown good enthusiasm in athletics. In Volley Ball IEOR lost in first match. Mohammad Abdul Qavi played excellent in that match but lost due to lack of good booster.

The upcoming events in PG Sports are Kho-Kho, Cricket and Basket Ball.

Special thanks to the IEOR Sports co-ordinator Madhu Tangudu.
